Curl Talk with Maria Imaginário

After so many years of following her work on social media as an artist and thinking about the potential of her curls, it was time to kill the curiosity and meet Edna aka Maria Imaginário. I must confess when we met Maria, we only talked about natural hair – how the movement is going on in Portugal and a bunch of hair related things. We gave some tips (cause she couldn’t stop asking!) and exchanged some information regarding hair products such as her new favorite brand – Bouclème.

So, like us take your time to find out a bit more about her curls….

Curly Essence: Tell us a bit about the history of your curly hair….

Maria Imaginário: Like any young girl, I didn’t know how to deal with my curls, especially because I didn’t know how to take care of them, brushing was a nightmare and so on, but that changed with time. Since I was little I notice that my hair had definitely a very strong texture, is always changing, not on a day by day mood but its entire structure, I have no clue how is going to be a year from now.

Now is very strong and bulky, (thank god) but maybe next year my hair will change again, and start growing flat. And that would be so boring, hope not, but if it happens I will try to embrace it. I don’t know anyone that went through this… In these changing times, I have two textures of hair, like curly in the roots and straight in the tips and vice-versa. Besides my hair “changing personality” I never had any problem with it. I was always very relaxed and easy going, but now I’m more aware of the products I use and how my hair behaves.

Curly Essence:  Are you always worried about in having your curls in perfect shape, or are you more of an apologist of the “let it be”?

Maria Imaginário: The products that I use help to define my curls and when I use it I feel that my hair stays smoother than ever. But actually, I’m a let it be kind of person… I’m a free spirit and I feel like curls are just curls! They have their own life.

Curly Essence: Is there a secret that you can share concerning your curly hair?

Maria Imaginário: I really don’t have any secrets, I’m always trying to learn more about his health and maintenance, but no sorcery here, just take care.

Curly Essence: What products do you recommend and can’t live without?

Maria Imaginário: I’ve never straightened and dyed my hair and I’m OK with his natural look. Recently I decided to add more based natural products as possible in my hair routine. The simpler the better!! That’s what works best for me.

Curly Essence: What were the worst mistakes you made? What advice would you give to anyone who wants to venture out to embrace their curls?

Maria Imaginário: Humm mistakes, I think not starting to take care of my hair properly earlier. I’m very relaxed with how my hair looks and that made me sloppy on the choices I made regarding the products I used. I’m sure I never treated my hair poorly on purpose but didn’t know any better.

Luckily, I found great people that alert me for that. Now I’m always researching, making questions, and trying to see what works best for my hair. It really makes a difference! The best advice I can give is to try and see what is better for you, and don’t give up on the first attempts.

Curly Essence: What’s the best thing about being curly?

Maria Imaginário: I think is the funniest thing ever, because no matter how you feel about an outfit, your hair can never go wrong – your hair always saves the day. It’s like the key piece in your closet, that statement clothing that you will always have. Sorry, Gucci I already have my curls <3
