Natural Hair Glossary – Part I

Get to know a glossary with all the terms, ingredients and techniques you can imagine from our little world of natural hair.Sit down, grab a cup of tea and discover the 1st part of our Natural Hair Glossary!


Aloe Vera Gel: Adds moisture and shine. It is also known for aiding in hair growth for people with hair loss.

Almond Oil: Moisturizes and softens your curls.

Amla Oil: Comes from the Indian gooseberry and is nourishing for the hair.  Amla Oil strengthens the hair, adds shine and promotes hair growth.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): You should dilute with water and used as a rinse to clarify the hair and scalp, removing build-up and preventing dandruff. Apple Cider Vinegar corrects pH balance of the hair, making it smooth with less frizz. Quick ACV recipe: 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups of water.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ASL): STAY AWAY – Can be found in most shampoos and has the ability to leave your hair very dry.

Ayurvedic Regimen: This regimen uses all natural Indian products to grow healthy, thick, long hair.

BAA: Big A** Afro

Big Chop (BC): When you decide to go natural and cut off all your hair to transition.

Bagging: You can use a shower cap/ plastic cap, or plastic bag to do deep conditioning or deep treatments.

Brazilian Nut Oil: Contains linoleic acid, vitamins A and E which protects the hair and scalp. It also contains protein which prevents hair from breaking.

Castor Oil:  Prevents scalp infections which can cause hair loss. Well-known for being great for generating new hair growth. Best time of the year to use it: Winter!!

Clarifying: Ensures that you will remove any dirt/oils and product build up from the hair using shampoos  or natural products that are said to clarify.

Coconut Oil:  It has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties; rich in vitamins and minerals. Coconut contains which prevents hair breakage, loss while softens the hair.

Cones: Are silicones – this ingredient is not water soluble and leaves a film on the hair strands.

Co-wash: When you use conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo!

Deep Condition (DC): When you use a hair mask/ hair treatment on your hair for a longer period of time. It can aid in adding protein or moisture back into the hair.

Dusting: Slight trimming of the hair. The hair should look like dust falling during the trim.

EO (Essential Oils): These are liquids derived from flowers and parts of many plants. Perfect for you curls and can be mixed with carrier oils.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO):  It improves the elasticity of the hair and is ultra-hydrating and softens hair.
